Guns/Ammo sold since 11-4-08?????????

Does anybody have some statistics on just how many guns have really been sold; and how much ammo since that fateful day in November. We all know it's a lot, but I can't find anything printed. I'm sure the FBI and BATF know, or at least think they do, but they're not sharing.

Some video floating around here claimed something like 100 million guns and 1 billion in rounds.

Since ammo can't be kept "in stock", I guess what is sold has been
the total of the manufacturing capacity, maybe a little less because of supply chain constraints.

There are no readily-available numbers for ammo sales, but there is one good indicator for gun sales: the number of NICS background checks conducted by the FBI. Each background check does not necessarily translate into an actual gun transfer; some sales may not go through after the background check, and I believe some people may be purchasing multiple firearms on the same background check. But it's still a good rough indicator of volume --- and how that volume has changed over time. The raw numbers for the last ten years are available from the FBI. For the last four months, here are the totals:

Nov-08: 1,529,635
Dec-08: 1,523,426
Jan-09: 1,213,885
Feb-09: 1,259,078

My first question was "Compared to what?" Turns out that November and December were 47% and 46% higher, respectively, than the next-highest month last year (March, 2008). January (+17%) and February (+21%) of 2009 were also considerably higher than last March. But the typical sales reporting compares a month's results to the same month one year previously. Here are each month's percentage increases compared to that same month the year before:

Nov-08: +41.6%
Dec-08: +23.8%
Jan-09: +28.8%
Feb-09: +23.3%

Very interesting table.
------------------------------------------------------

*You can see the Y2K spike in the last few months of 1999.

*You can see the Sept 11th spike in the last few months of 2001.

*You can see the "Oh shit, Obama just got elected spike" in the end of 2008 and extending to date.

My local FFL dealer, recently ordered 100K inventory, received 15K. He stated supplies of anything high demand (AR's, GLOCK 19, etc) is next to impossible to get, he said his business was through the roof on sales.

I have heard the same thing from many local shops however there are a couple (one in particular) where I got my Saiga 12, that is stocked to the brim with pistols of all kinds, AR's, AK's (WASR-10's) tactical shotguns etc, the prices are decent for the times but they always seem to keep stuff in stock which is surprising.

He has got a good business model set in place.

I remeber when I was looking for Glocks nobody on the net had them and the back order was 5-7 months and climbing.

Found on ONE PLACE on Gunbroker that had them stacked from the floor to ceiling (LITERALLY)

They have an excellent business model and they are the first to be suppiled rather than all the Jonny come Latelys'.

Dam you didnt lie on that .........one place I saw with my own two eyes a lady whip out her plastic and pick up 10 Glocks in one swoop.......she couldnt even carry them out (needed the staff to help)

I was talking with the dude after wards and I think the lady dropped almost 4K between the guns and bullets.

He said this is absolutley surreal.

I agreed.

'92 .308 Radway Green now .70/round. I have seen it for .80/

Some places still have ammo and arms, but not walmart and not hardly any surplus at all or at least not cheap.

All good deals are gone unless you want shady things early.

CTD is running a business not a charity, I'm surprised more places didn't/haven't jacked up the prices 4 fold to curb demand. It looks like they would rather work 12+ plus hour days 7 days a week to fill orders.

By your logic Academy would be rip-off artists too. 6 months ago you could get it for a quarter of that price. Hell it hasn't been that long ago when you could get it for $2/box. Good thing I stacked wide and deep back then.
